With deep roots in the original Carlson Gracie lineage from Brazil, our academy has proudly been Ashford’s longest-running BJJ gym. Led by Laurie Dodson, a 3rd degree black belt, we’ve built a thriving community where beginners and seasoned competitors train side by side.
For over a decade, we’ve helped students grow in skill, confidence, and discipline — many have gone on to open their own successful teams across Kent.

Beginners Brazilian jiu jitsu
Welcome to the world of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)! whether you're completly new to martial arts or transitioning from another discipline, here is your gateway to understanding the fundamental's of BJJ.

Beginners classes
In a beginners BJJ class you can expect a welcoming and supportive environment tailored specifically for those who are new to the art.

Here's what to expect in beginners class
Warm up; classes typically start with a warm up session consisting of dynamic stretches, light cardio exercises and movements specific to BJJ like shrimping and bridging.
Fundamental techniques: You'll learn fundamentalk techniques such as basic positions, escapes, submissions and transistions.
The instructor will breakdown each technique step by step and provide ample time to practice.
Partner drills: You'll partner up with other students to practice techniques in a controlled setting. This allows you to apply what learned while developing timing, coordination and spatial awareness.
Sparring (Rolling): Depending on the class structure there may be a portion dedicated to to live sparring.
Sparring is usually light and controlled with emphasis on applying learned techniques.
